What was the purpose of the law?

Galatians 3:19a (GNT) “What, then, was the purpose of the Law? It was added in order to show what wrongdoing is, and it was meant to last until the coming of Abraham's descendant, to whom the promise was made.” The law was given by Moses through the old covenant basically to show man what sin is. It was only meant to last until Jesus came. Galatians 3:24-25 continues to say, “And so the Law was in charge of us until Christ came, in order that we might then be put right with God through faith. Now that the time for faith is here, the Law is no longer in charge of us.” Dear child of God, God’s promise does not come because you do good works. No, not at all. His promise descends on you by entirely your faith and belief in Him. So the contrasting difference between the old covenant (OC) and New covenant (NC) is that the OC promotes works by the law which can never make anyone righteous while the NC teaches faith and belief in God through Jesus.
