Guard your tongue

Deuteronomy 23:21-23 (MSG) “When you make a vow to GOD, your God, don’t put off keeping it; GOD, your God, expects you to keep it and if you don’t you’re guilty. But if you don’t make a vow in the first place, there’s no sin. If you say you’re going to do something, do it. Keep the vow you willingly vowed to GOD, your God. You promised it, so do it.” Sometimes out of anger or joy, we utter certain words and even promise certain things to those around us. God has accorded so much power to the tongue to the extent that you can create and destroy using it. The scripture above shows us how serious God is with promises. When you make a promise, you ought to keep it. It’s better not to make a promise at all if you know you won’t keep it. Jesus tells us in Matthew 12:36, that men shall be judged for every careless words they speak. How come it is the words they judge and not actions? It’s because you and I are expected to be like God in whose image we were created. God does not lie, and everything He speaks, He fulfills. That’s the image we must possess as well. Heaven and earth shall pass away but His word shall not pass away. Likewise, your words shall not pass away. Those you wronged may forget all your actions but your words may be hard to forget. You will be judged for every single word you speak. To accept Jesus as Lord and saviour, you confess with your mouth because what you confess, you strengthen. Brethren, I urge you today, not to utter any careless words at anytime. You might be annoyed, sad, happy, or even excited, but let your state of mind not dictate what you are going to say. Always restrain yourself from promises if you are not sure of fulfilling them. Your tongue has power. Remember that always.
